For $15 Billion, an ugly elevated highway was torn down, put underground. A beautiful bridge was built, parks too, in Boston.

Reagan vetoed that, but pushed for Stealth Bombers.  We now have 21 of them, all needing special hangars and TLC, so that’s about 1 Billion each.  To  defend us.  How’d they do on September 11th?

Yet here we go again, with Reagan’s “Star Wars” missile defense system, being pushed by Bush.  Good things came out of the Big Dig.  Big Weapons destroy life, property, the very earth itself.   Whither goest we and our tax dollars?

Has the occult hand grabbed the Chicago Tribune?  The 9-11 Commission Report came out this week, but Perspective Sunday shows us Kerry’s shoes and journalism trickery.  Betty Ong  couldn’t get the FAA to pay attention.  The Trib seems to be examining its navel.  International Falls, MN is cold!, is on the same page as their report on the Commission’s findings.  Why not publish Tom Kean’s very good speech, which was unifying and useful.

The Trib could have had Carol Marin?  Instead a Match.com editorial on the Repubs again?  Oberweis came in 2nd.  Why isn’t he the nominee, or let Jack Ryan run?  The Trib thru the ages has ignored all sorts of bad behavior.  Henry Hyde, for instance.  Then 2 editorials on Monday on MOVIES?   The Trib stands up for the rights of 15 year olds to see R-rated movies without their parents, but 50-year-olds can’t grow  marijuana in their own basement for their own use?

An editorial about the revolving door at Enron, and now there’s similar corruption on  the Commodities Futures board.  So where was the news story the editorial was based on?  Front page?  No, Lance Armstrong there.  I never found it.  Did read about Microsoft.   Wall Street doesn’t like dividends?  Explain  please.  That doesn’t make sense, especially, as Barnhart says, corporate profits are up and worker compensation is down.   Does it not occur to the Trib that people don’t read novels because they have no time?

The back page today about Iran reads like a dark and stormy war coming on.  President Khatami says one thing, but analysts are allowed to spin quite a different tale, in what is supposed to be a NEWS paper.   Where is the background historical info?  It’s OK that we invade Iraq, but a neighboring country is supposed to keep its 900 mile border completely sealed?  We do that, right?   We’ve been infiltrating countries since that 1947 act established the CIA.   Why doesn’t the Trib print a summary of that act, which might explain how people the world over have come to hate us.
