When was marijuana classified as a more dangerous drug than cocaine? All drugs used to be legal in early America, didn’t they? George Washington took opium every day of his adult life, said that historian who I think has been named to head the Lincoln library.
When did we become so fearful? Where’s this Faith, this trust in God that we Proclaim? A woman with eye disease is arrested for growing pot, another woman gets dragged out of a bathtub after cops break in her door, and we brag about our Freedom? Since drugs have become illegal, only children can get drugs?
Amity Schlaes recently equated Protectionism with going back to the Dark Ages in Trade. But outlawing drugs has led to a Dark Age of corruption and violence. And it is backwards economically. No taxes come in, but tax money goes out to arrest, prosecute, and imprison.
And the Trib is not concerned enough to editorialize? Knowing that hypocrisy and the Black Market brought down the Soviet Union? Has the Trib given up? A previous editorial lamented that college students are more interested in money now than in doing something useful? What about the Trib?
That is, “pursuit of happiness” in the Declaration of Independence.
Did you read Rick Kogan’s review of Mort Sahl in the 2-20-04 Chicago Tribune?
He called Bush, “the Unknown Soldier”; “he imagined a conversation between the president and one of his daughters: ‘What did you do in the war, daddy?’
‘I started it’”.
6 days, nothing about Halliburton in the Chicago Tribune, except for the Doonesbury cartoons?
The Speaker of the House, 3rd in line for the Presidency, is from Illinois,
where the Chicago Tribune is. No news about him either!

Letter to the Editor:
Jane went to Hanoi; Ollie went to Iran. He secretly sold weapons to the militant mullahs. They also received “intelligence” from us, allowing them to “eliminate” anyone on the “Left” who opposed them. And when Iraq invaded Iran, we apparently gave the Mullahs important info before a crucial battle, so they looked like heroes. (The U.S and the Iran-Iraq War by Stephen R. Shalom) on the web
Don Rumsfeld, meanwhile, went to Bagdad. Saddam had brutally killed all his rivals and made himself Supreme Ruler. But he was letting our corporations back in. So we took him off our Terrorist list, sold him planes, and gave him intelligence info so he too could eliminate any “Leftists” (World War 3 Report) on the web. And better fight an 8-year-long war with Iran that killed maybe a million people.
But its Clinton’s fault the Muslim World is mad at us? Don & Ollie had nothing to do with it? And mo’ better “Intelligence” is the only god that will save us? “It is now clear that we are facing an implacable enemy whose avowed objective is world domination…there are no rules in such a game. Hitherto acceptable norms of human contact do not apply. If the U.S is to survive, it must use more clever, more sophisticated, and more effective means than those used against us.” That’s from a “blue-ribbon panel explaining to President Truman” why we had to have a CIA, in George Crile’s book, Charlie Wilson’s War.
We’ve been all over the world, doing that. From imposing the Shah on Iran for 25 years to overthrowing the elected president of Chile on September 11, 1973; we seemed to see “Commies” in every independence movement in the developing world. Terrorists are here, because we were there, to take liberties with an immigrant’s protest sign. Osama “read our book”, to quote George C. Scott’s “Patton”. Read Charlie Wilson’s War and think what you can do for your country.
$1.8 Billion for AMTRAK is way too much? But $1.7 Billion for the Osprey is O.K? 30 deaths so far from crashes as a helicopter tries to turn into an airplane.
George Bush is instead cutting $1.7 Billion from First Responders; firemen, police and paramedics.
